Suzette Hall, the dedicated founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, is a go-to savior for dogs in distress across Los Angeles County, California. Hall has encountered countless rescue situations, but a recent call she received left her with an ominous feeling she couldn’t shake.
A concerned local had stumbled upon a small, blonde dog huddled in the corner of a stranger’s yard. As they approached, they noticed something extraordinary—this little dog was not alone. She was fiercely guarding a litter of newborn puppies, protecting them with every ounce of her being.
“These babies were born just this morning,” Hall shared on Facebook, her words heavy with the urgency of the situation.
Without wasting a moment, Hall and her team of devoted volunteers raced to the scene. When they arrived, they found the mother dog, later named Carol, curled protectively around her newborns. The team moved in carefully, their voices gentle and reassuring, hoping to gain Carol’s trust. However, the frightened mama dog, overwhelmed by fear, bolted the moment they got too close.
“When we first arrived, Carol was safe with her puppies, but as we approached, she ran off in sheer terror,” Hall recounted. “Her maternal instincts were strong; she desperately wanted to return to her babies but was too afraid.”
Undeterred, the team safely collected the puppies and immediately began formulating a plan to reunite the terrified mother with her precious litter. Hall devised a strategy to coax the anxious dog back into the yard, successfully closing the gate behind her. Yet, despite being back within reach of her puppies, Carol’s fear kept her from letting anyone near.
“She was so protective, so determined to guard her little ones that she wouldn’t let us come close,” Hall explained. Knowing Carol’s trust would be hard-won, Hall set up a humane trap baited with food to entice the hungry mother. Not long after, Carol cautiously entered the trap, and the door clicked shut behind her.
Panic surged through Carol as she realized she was confined, separated from her babies. But Hall’s team acted swiftly, bringing the tiny puppies to their mother, who visibly relaxed upon their reunion.
It was a moment that brought tears to all of us.”
Hall then transported Carol and her six puppies—named Greg, Peter, Bobby, Marcia, Jan, and Cindy after The Brady Bunch—to Camino Pet Hospital for a thorough check-up. The little family was given a clean bill of health and was soon on their way to a foster home.
The moment Carol stepped into her foster home, her demeanor transformed. The once terrified mother now exuded calm, sensing that she and her babies were finally safe.
“When we arrived at the foster home, it was as if Carol knew she was out of danger. She allowed me to comfort her and help her nurse her puppies,” Hall wrote. “She snuggled up to her babies, finally knowing she didn’t have to face the world alone.”
A few days have passed since their rescue, and Carol and her puppies are thriving in their new environment. While it will be some time before this little family finds their forever homes, they are flourishing under the care they desperately need.
“Mama Carol was so scared, but now she’s a picture of love and trust,” Hall said with a smile.
