Senior Dog's 1,700-Day Shelter Stay: Waiting for a Family to Love

JP was once a vibrant, social pup living his best life until 2019 when his owner was deployed into military service. Since then, JP has called Bideawee Animal Shelter home, where he’s been patiently waiting for his forever family for over five long years.

When JP first arrived at Bideawee, he was full of joy, eagerly wagging his tail at everyone he met. His infectious zest for life made him an instant favorite. However, the years in the shelter have taken a toll on his once-sunny disposition.

“He’s become more selective about the company he keeps,” says Melissa Treuman, Senior Director of Development and Communication at Bideawee. “It’s not his fault.  JP has developed a bit of ‘stranger danger,’ but when he’s around people he trusts, he’s as loving and affectionate as ever.”

JP’s wariness around strangers is a sign of his resilience rather than a flaw. He’s learned to be cautious, but beneath that cautious exterior lies a heart of gold. With his Bideawee caregivers, JP thrives. He relishes belly rubs, cuddles, and any treat that comes his way. Outdoors, JP is in his element, exploring with curiosity and enthusiasm. Though it may take a little time to gain his trust, the reward is a loyal, loving companion who will be forever grateful.

One dedicated volunteer has made JP her lunchtime companion every day for years, a testament to the deep bonds he’s capable of forming. “She’s incredibly fond of him,” Treuman shares, “and that says a lot about JP’s character. He just needs the right environment to truly shine.”

Sadly, JP’s long stay at the shelter has less to do with his temperament and more to do with his size. “Unfortunately, his story is not unique,” Treuman notes. “Data from Hill’s Pet Nutrition’s State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report reveals that while 66 percent of people are likely to adopt a shelter dog, only 24 percent are open to adopting a large dog. That’s less than 1 in 4 people. According to Shelter Animals Count, the length of stay for large dogs has doubled since 2019.”

Despite the challenges, JP hasn’t lost hope. His friends at Bideawee are determined to help him find the perfect home. To make the transition easier, JP’s adoption fee has already been covered by a generous fan. Plus, Hill’s Pet Nutrition is offering his future family a year’s supply of Science Diet Senior Vitality dog food. Additionally, his new family will receive a complimentary four-week training package with GoodPup, ensuring JP settles in smoothly.

JP would thrive in a quiet, loving home without young children or other pets. He’s ready to give all his love to a family that’s willing to open their hearts to him. After five years of waiting, JP’s forever home is out there, and with a little luck, it’s just around the corner.

If you’re ready to welcome a loyal, affectionate companion into your life, consider giving JP the loving home he deserves. The wait has been long, but the love he has to offer is endless.
